Descripción:From a somewhat restricted conception of literature, this article examines some essays written by Costa Rican thinker Emma Gamboa Alvarado, in order to inquire about the relationship between education, freedom and democracy, put foward by this author. For this purpose, it is also discussed the major philosophical and pedagogical sources Gamboa used to develop her own proposals. Omar Dengo and John Dewey are two of the authors with whom our author maintains a richer dialogue. Finally, the debate in the national press in 1946 between Emma Gamboa and Emilia Prieto is resumed, concerning the political commitment intellectuals must assume.
