| Deskribapena: | The article examines what Ansgar Nünning has termed as the “cultural life of disaster” and how certain literary and artistic discourses have encoded and reimagined disaster to suggest an alternative narrative that deconstructs the sensationalism disseminated by the mainstream media. The aim is to show how the “cultural life of disaster” emerges, is reclaimed, and is narrated as a practice of memory in certain literary and artistic works by authors of Central American origin (Javier Zamora, Regina José Galindo, Beatriz Cortez, Irma Velásquez Nimatuj, Cristina Benjamin, and Marta Leonor González). In this sense, the purpose is to show how adverse events —including hurricanes Mitch (1998) and Juana (1988); the criminalization of migrant children, the Managua earthquake of 1972— are reshaped, acquire new nuances and meanings, and shed light on knowledge related to the management of life and the affective plot. |
