| Beskrivelse: | References to intellectual disability and cognitive disability are increasingly common in the field of disability. Both terms are used not only as diagnostic labels but also as descriptors of the developmental profiles of different individuals. This essay guides readers through a process of critical reflection on these concepts, their origins, the ideas associated with them, and the different perspectives from which they have been understood. The analysis shows that there is still no consensus on how to define the neurobiological processes, systems, and functions that give rise to complex human abilities that may be used to describe a person's overall capacity. As a result, efforts to clarify these concepts remain at an early stage and have not led to meaningful conceptual change. The use of these terms can have a serious and profound impact on individuals and society. The objective is not to replace one label with another, but rather to recognize human diversity and ensure that social environments take responsibility for identifying and removing the barriers that exclude and limit the participation of all individuals. |
