Relationship between the resilient modulus of subbase materials obtained through backcalculation and that measured in the laboratory at the 'Virginia Smart Road test section'

Descripción:The 'Virginia Smart Road test section' project provides an excellent opportunity to test various hypotheses regarding pavement performance, material characteristics, and their combinations. The flexible pavement section includes 12 segments of approximately 100 meters in length, which have been thoroughly studied using a complex arrangement of sensors installed beneath the roadway during its construction. During pavement construction, a Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) was used to collect deflection data by applying different loads on the pavement surface. In addition, the resilient modulus of the granular subbase material (21-B) was evaluated. The results of the resilient modulus for the subbase layer (21-B) in the 'Virginia Smart Road' indicate that the material modulus is a function of stress, and its behavior can be predicted using a k-θ model. The deflection results from the FWD testing confirm the stress-dependence of the moduli; however, the FWD results show a less pronounced influence of stress state on the moduli. In general, the modulus obtained through backcalculation can be compared with the modulus measured in the laboratory.
