Descripción:The aim of this study is to offer a close look to the labour carried out by women in Costa Rica according to the 1864 and 1883 censuses and to establish their relationships with gender representations through a comparative perspective. The results reveal that there were evident quantitative changes from one census to the other and that the said changes were related not only to economic, but  also to cultural factors, associated to gender representations.
