Quantification of two heavy metals: lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) by atomic absorption spectroscopy in two types of soils (protected zone and agricultural zone) in Costa Rica.

Description:The objective of this study was to quantify heavy metals (Pb and Zn) and investigate their potential environmental impact. The study was conducted by analyzing soils in the El Chayote Protected Zone and on an adjacent agricultural plot, specifically used for coffee cultivation, located in the cantons of Naranjo and Zarcero in Costa Rica. The study and quantification of heavy metals were performed using atomic absorption spectroscopy, with digestion as a preliminary step in sample treatment. Zinc was found in the samples analyzed in the agricultural zone (ranging from 62 ± 1 mg/L to 87 ± 1 mg/L), while values ​​from the protected zone ranged from 10 ± 1 mg/L to 47 ± 1 mg/L. Lead was not quantified in the soil of the protected zone. It should be noted that the reported values ​​did not exceed Regulation No. 37757-S (450 Zn mg/kg of dry soil and 180 Pb mg/kg of dry soil).
