الوصف:From a global history perspective, the article reveals how the Incas were idealized as bearers of esoteric knowledge since the 16th century, focusing on the case of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (1539-1616) and his appropriation by the French Martinist Henri Girgois (1833-?) in Argentina in the 19th century. The article demonstrates how this contributed to giving an Americanist orientation to Latin American esotericism that persists to this day. It also shows how the concept of “Western esotericism” emerged in Buenos Aires because of Girgois's contentious relationships with Argentine theosophists and his subsequent adherence to Martinism.
