Descripción:The experiment wasconducted at the "Alfredo Volio Mata" Experiment Station ofthe University of Costa Rica. The asexual seed was extractedfrom an established plantation that was harvested during fouryears with pruning intervals of 56-112 days. The selectedbranches were divided into three cuttings, 40 cm long with atleast three buds in the basal, medial and apical parts of eachbranch. The highest percentage of rooting and sprouting in a35-day period was observed in the 112 day-old cuttings: 9%sprouts, 12% roots and 31% with both sprouts and roots. Theoptimum age of the branch to obtain maximum sprouting androoting was estimated at 117 days. The cuttings taken fromthe basal and medial portions of the branch had 10% moresprouts and roots than the cuttings taken from the apical part. There were noticeable differences between the application ornot of IBA (P≤0.01). Depending on the age of the cuttingand the part of the branch it was taken from, the use of IBAcaused an 11 to 15% increase in total sprouting.
