Descripción:This paper has three objectives. The first one is to present the notion of “intermediality”; a concept that shows up in North America and Europe in the 1980’s; and it is discussed in Latin America in artistic and literary debates during the last decade of the century. Intermediality was named, at the beginning, as a contemporary phenomenon, expressed as a practice. Then, this phenomenon encouraged an analytic perspective which privileges the difference (in-between) and the role of the matter in significant and communicative processes. The second objective, which follows the first one, is to examine the opportunities and risks, not only theoretical but also methodological, that this concept encloses. Finally, those opportunities and risks are related with the interdisciplinary activities of the Escuela de Estudios Generales at Universidad de Costa Rica.
