Description:This article discusses the relation between crime and nation in Tatiana Lobo’s detective novel El año del laberinto. Lobos’ novel criticizes the Costa Rican liberal nation-building project by claiming that, since its origins in late XIX Century, that project has benefited from crime. The present article analyzes how criminal acts have a key role in economic and political spheres, as well as the impact of such acts in characters that represent different social groups.
