| Descrizione: | This article is presented as a contribution to better understand the achievements and shortcomings related to the style of development Costa Rica has promoted in the last two decades. The study is divided into six sections: the first is an introduction that presents the transition from the import substitution model to the export-oriented strategy that the country promotes since the early 1980s. The second section is aimed at evaluating the implementation and results of the new economic policy based on the recommendations made by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank regarding policies of macroeconomic stabilization and structural adjustment. The third section evaluates the impact of export-oriented strategy of development on economic growth. The fourth section makes the connection between the achievements of the export-oriented strategy and the increase of the fiscal deficit and external and internal debt. The fifth section has the purpose of evaluating the behavior of the main social indicators within the framework of development that has prioritized economic growth over economic distribution. Finally, the last section is oriented to outline the main shortcomings of the policy of development, while recommending a series of policies for implementing an agenda of development that can accomplish economic growth with social equity. |
