REPATRIATION OF FRANCISCO MORAZÁN’S REMAINS FROM COSTA RICA TO EL SALVADOR: THE FIRST STEPS OF A HERO (1848-1849)

| Descrizione: | By analysing the repatriation of Francisco Morazán’s remains from Costa Rica to El Salvador (1848-49), this paper is intended to highlight the first steps of the official heroization of the Honduran caudillo in Central America. With the support of archives, newspapers and secondary sources, we first emphasize what were the identities being built while Central American States were proclaiming their independence from the Federal Republic. In a second step, the question is of understanding how the celebration of a unionist hero could be allowed, in particular in El Salvador where Morazán was identified with the country. Finally, we inscribe this repatriation within a more global schematic, defining the heroic models created in this period. A particular objective of this article is determining to what extent the repatriation participated in the development of a memory against the influence of the Guatemalan caudillo Rafael Carrera in the isthmus. |
