The Phonology of Preconsonantal and Multiple Rhotics in Costa Rican Spanish

| Deskribapena: | The Spanish spoken in the central parts of Costa Rica is characterized by its high number of non-tap/flap/trill realizations of rhotic phonemes in different environments. In this paper I analyze particularly the lenitions of preconsonantal and multiple rhotics (the latter corresponding to trills in many other Spanish dialects). Based on both synchronic and diachronic data, following the model that represents trills as geminated taps phonologically, I propose that both phenomena are instances of the same process, that is, an avoidance of a coronal tap before a similar consonant. I show that there is a clear correlation between the incidence of rhotic lenitions before a consonant and the similarity between the consonant in question and a coronal tap, which explains why trills (corresponding to the geminate /ɾɾ/) present a higher frequency of lenitions than any preconsonantal rhotic in this linguistic variety. |
