| Descrição: | This article explores the subjective perceptions that young people in an urban slum have of their own poverty status. Although they do not perceive themselves as poor and rather consider themselves as belonging to the middle class, youth living in contexts of poverty have a clear idea of what poverty means: living in huts, not having enough to eat and barely any clothes to wear. For them poverty is evident when they compare themselves to others, and in that sense, the high presence of migrant population, which is perceived as one who suffers more deprivation, allows them, in their imagination, to escape poverty and the stigma it implies. the article is product of an ethnographic research that included group interviews and participant observation in two groups of young people in a community marked by poverty |
