Descripción: | A bacteriological study was made of 50 children with chronic suppurative otitis; 106 species capable of causing the lesion were isolated. The organism occurring most frequently was Proteus (all four species), followed by Staphylococcus aureus, Streplococcus (a or y hemolytic), Pseudomonas spp., Escherichia spp., Klebsiella, Hemophilus influenzae, Neisseria catarrhalis, and acid-resistant bacilli (in smears only). Only 20 of the 50 patients showed mono-microbian infections; the rest showed variable numbers of organisms, up to six in some cases. The need is pointed out, of using selective media in bacteriological studies of chronic otitis, in order to prevent the spread of Gram-negative organisms. |
