| Descripción: | The growth of the population of owned dogs has driven the development of products intended to complement the diets of these animals, including dietary supplements and snacks or treats. The objective of this study was to analyze the nutritional composition, ingredients, and additives used in products for dogs registered in the supplement category of the Animal Feed Directorate of the National Animal Health Service of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica (DAA-SENASA-MAG), specifically snacks or treats, between June 2023 and December 2024. For this purpose, a database was developed using the products available on the DAA-SENASA-MAG DAASIRE virtual platform and registered in the supplement category, comprising a total of 210 products. Of the total products evaluated, 53.3% were manufactured in Costa Rica and 46.7% were imported. Wheat, corn, soybean, chicken meat, and beef were among the most frequently used ingredients. The synthetic antioxidants butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) were declared in 11.0% and 14.3% of the products, respectively. The average contents of moisture, crude protein, ether extract, crude fiber, metabolizable energy, and carbohydrates were 19.7%, 13.8%, 6.1%, 3.0%, 2944 kcal/kg, and 52.4%, respectively. Supplements with active registration in Costa Rica showed diverse nutritional characteristics and ingredient profiles. Their inclusion in dogs’ diets should take into consideration the amount offered and frequency of consumption, as improper use could contribute to dietary imbalances. |
