الوصف:Determinations of surficial arsenic were made in soil and rock samples to identify sites where this element is present. The study area is located between the districts Aguas Zarcas and La Palmera, in the North of Costa Rica, in a geological context characterized by volcanic rocks, geological structures and thermal manifestations. The analyzed geochemical properties pH [4.4 – 7.7], electrical conductivity [0.04 - 0,46] mS/cm, cation exchange capacity [17.5 – 48.6] cmol(+)/kg indicate soils with potential to retain ions, which influences the mobility of arsenic. Several techniques were used to establish the elemental and mineralogical composition (ICP, DRX, FRX), finding arsenic only in the limestone unit La Palmera, [52.0 - 66.0] mg/kg in rocks and [2.0 - 21.0] mg/kg in the soil. The results also reflected the content of abundant Fe-oxides, volcanic glass and clays. Therefore, a geological origin is proposed for the presence of arsenic in this area.
