| Popis: | This article analyzes the interrelation between the anti-communist phobia prevailing among the US authorities and the pretensions of economic diversification of the Costa Rican ruling bloc in the 1980s. The elite took advantage of this paranoia, the context of crisis and the Central American war to obtain funds that will promote the creation of the Banco Agro Industrial y de Exportaciones (BANEX), reaffirming its hegemonic position within Costa Rican society. This work was prepared by studying the purposes that led to the formation of the aforementioned private bank, who were its proponents and, therefore, it is linked to the history of power and the formation of elites. The main sources corresponded to CIA documents and a USAID report detailing the conditions of their potential allies in Costa Rica. |
