| Cur Síos: | Jayro Bustamante's film La Llorona is set within the context of the trial against dictator Efraín Ríos Montt for his crimes against humanity. Sentenced to 80 years in prison for the massacres of indigenous people in Guatemala, his sentence was overturned by the Constitutional Court due to procedural errors. The article aims to examine the revaluation of certain elements of Mayan culture that function as strategies of resistance in the face of his sentence’s revocation. This situation of impunity, exacerbated by the figure of the disappeared, poses serious problems for grieving processes to take place. Drawing on Jean Allouch's (1996) proposal on mourning and Jacques Derrida's (1995) notion of the ghost, this article addresses the figure of the disappeared, relations between death and mourning, and the impact of gaze and voice on the film's emotional texture. |
