| Descripció: | The long trajectory of the Las Mercedes-1 site is analyzed, from its early occupation ascribed to 1500-300 BCE. Exploratory research suggests the site’s relevance in multiple periods. Absolute determinations date infrastructure to 1000-1200 BCE that outlines a residential, administrative, and ceremonial center. The design of one architectural group is attributable to chiefdom governance, this includes: a singular structure, paved roads, hydraulic works, and a plaza. After 1200 BCE, funerary use took over spaces and structures, along with peripheral cemeteries. European glass beads were reported for one of these cemeteries. For the final segment of the pre-Columbian chronology, both transformations and persistence have been noted in infrastructure and monumental sculptures. However, the charter of the chiefdom’s principality may have lasted until the 16th century. The multi-component funerary evidence, with copious graves of the late period, motivated the high impact of looting, until the patrimonial preservation of the architectural core since 1990 within EARTH University. |
