JAGUAR CONSERVATION IN AMERICA: ASSESSING THE ROLE OF PROTECTED LANDSCAPE AREAS AND HUMAN-IMPACTED BIOMES

| Popis: | Introduction: Expanding human activities continues being a threat to many large-bodied species worldwide, such as in the case of jaguars. As these activities continue, it is critical to understand how the home range sizes of species will be impacted by human-modified landscapes. Objetive: Here, we evaluated the relative importance of protected and unprotected land uses on jaguar home-range size across their range in Latin America. Methods: We considered home range data from 117 jaguars across different habitat protection categories, and specific types of human biomes. We used a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) to test differences in home range size in relation to the spatial overlap of jaguars with the different land conservation categories. Results: The analysis revealed that most jaguar home-ranges occurred within Jaguar Conservation Units (62%), followed by Protected Areas (21%), Indigenous People's Lands (10%) and Jaguar Movement Corridors (3%). When we combined the first three land protection figures, we found that the majority of the jaguars studied (76.1%), occur inside these conservation lands. We found, however, that several different human land uses, including Rangelands, Croplands, and Semi-natural lands, were also important within jaguar home ranges of nearly 24% of the individuals examined. Jaguars with the largest home ranges occupied the rangelands (i.e., a biome used mainly for livestock grazing), followed by cropland (i.e., lands used mainly for annual crops) and seminatural lands (i.e., inhabited lands with minor use). Conclusions: Although conservation land was far more important, human-impacted lands appear to play an important role today in satisfying the spatial requirements of jaguars, and we expect that this importance will increase in the near future, in order to guarantee long-term viable jaguar populations, and ensure connectivity across them. Our results could support the conclusions of other studies indicated that jaguars tolerate a certain level of anthropic disturbances, as long as threats are not so severe. Based on our findings, we propose an increased emphasis on (1) better understanding the role of different anthropogenic land uses to promoting conservation schemes in the territory of jaguars, and (2) better engagement of stakeholders in creating and implementing sustainable land use management plans for long-term jaguar conservation across Americas. |
