| Descripció: | Introduction: The development of the academic guitar in Costa Rica during the twentieth century is embedded in processes of cultural and institutional modernization that transformed the national artistic practices. In this context, the consolidation of a guitar tradition was the result of dynamics of symbolic legitimation, professionalization, and community organization. Objective: To analyze the role of the protagonists who promoted the introduction, legitimation, institutionalization, and professionalization of the guitar in Costa Rica, giving rise to the Costa Rican Guitar Movement. Methods: A triangulation was employed based on testimonies from media outlets, interviews with participants, a review of previous research, and consultation of primary sources such as concert programs, posters, and other historical documents. This was done to obtain a comprehensive view of the process. Results: The interaction among musicians, media, and cultural institutions enabled the construction of a legitimized artistic field, characterized by increasing professionalization and community cohesion, with both artistic and social impacts. Conclusions: The emergence of the academic guitar in Costa Rica corresponds to a long-term historical process in which the articulation between individual initiatives and institutional structures was key to the consolidation of a musical tradition that remains relevant today. |
