Descripción: | The collective photographic exhibition “We Exist” was inaugurated during July 2019 in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Its aim was representing the “national dynamics of Bolivian women”. In this essay, we dwell on the portraits of identity of Chola images, which were taken with an underwater camera by Wara Vargas Lara, photojournalist from La Paz. In the photographs, the “women of skirt” dive into the depths of a pond with their dresses, hats and braids, a surreal setting. In this underground world, it is possible to glimpse, with tentative ideas, into the relationship between the visual elements of the photographs and the concepts of “motley [abigarrado]” (Zavaleta Mercado, 2008; Rivera Cusicanqui, 2010), “performance” (Taylor, 2010), “the baroque ethos” (Echeverría, 2007). The essay has a central place in this paper, not just as a writing form that combines art and science, but as an approach methodology that allows visual images to be related to conceptual metaphors. |
