Description:This article is an analysis of the historical evolution of the Salvadoran army from a personalist military dictatorship to an institutional military dictatorship during the years 1948 to 1960. It studies how the process took place and the reasons that caused this evolution. It was not something sudden, but rather part of a historical process and it is there where the keys to a period in the history of El Salvador and civil-military relations can be found and which can contribute to a better understanding of it. It was in this period when the Salvadoran army broke with the past and, although briefly, became an agent of change in the country.
