Descripción:The degraded areas need techniques related to the improvement in edaphic conditions. The potential offered by herbaceous and shrubby species for the implementation of ecological rehabilitation techniques that allow an improvement in the sustainable use of soils was evaluated. The place studied was the eastern sector of Cerro Espíritu Santo, Naranjo (Costa Rica). Treatments were applied in three 40 m2 plots with two shrubby species, Lantana camara L., Lasianthaea fruticosa (L.) and a herbaceous one, Musa x paradisiaca L.; The type of sowing used was quincunx, for a period of 6 months from August 2020 to February 2021. Variables such as survival percentage, improvement in the degree of acidity, erosion control and humidity percentage in each plot were evaluated. The survival percentage was 100 % for the species Lantana camara L. and Musa x paradisiaca L. The best performance in reducing acidity was the species Lantana camara L. 6.34. The best performance in erosion control was that of Musa x paradisiaca L. Lasianthaea fruticosa (L.) presented higher moisture retention in the soil. Calcium carbonate-based amendments of 400 grams and organic matter of 250 grams were used. The ecological rehabilitation potential of each species was optimal with respect to the mentioned variables, they had adaptability to degraded terrain. It is necessary to provide organic fertilizers such as horse mackerel and chicken manure, efficient in phosphorus fixation and nitrogen supply, coupling to the Andisol-type soil.
