Popis:The ‘indigenous’ category has been a historical and political construction intended to control culturally diverse groups in terms of political and economic domination, marking differences with European and Western cultures. Despite its essentialization for purposes of domination, indigenous groups have strategically adopted this label as a form of resistance, adapting to the historical attacks imposed on their identities by hegemonic groups. These processes are explored using Gayatri Spivak’s idea of strategic essentialism, which shows how indigenous groups have strategically used categorical essentialization as an effective form of resistance. The specific case of the Frente Independiente de Pueblos Indios at the end of the 20th century will be addressed, one of the first indigenous movements in Mexico that used the category to bring together the collective demand of diverse peoples in defense of their ways of life and their traditional means of subsistence.
