Descripción: | Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a major problem that affects public health worldwide, including Costa Rica. This situation has led to international organizations to take measures to alleviate the problem. Within these measures the identification of multiresistant bacterial organisms, epidemiological surveillance, implementation of strategies to minimize resistance and the development of new drugs are suggested. Following this last suggestion, this paper analyzes the new antibacterial approved regulatory agencies in the period 2007-2014, as well as drugs in phase II and III development in the U.S. and Europe. The data show that most of the new drugs are modifications of molecules from known families, calling attention to the need to innovate pharmacological strategies. Other analyzed alternatives, still in investigation, are the development of drugs with non-traditional action mechanisms, including isolation of lantibiotics, study of marine sources, hybrid synthesis, research on antimicrobial peptides, the use of bacteriophages and the development of drugs that modify virulence; although these options are still under research. We concluded that despite extensive research on the subject, in many cases this has not translated into options available for medical use. |
