Descripción:This study examines the structure of the Costa Rican banking system during the period 1997–2009 from the perspective of cost savings resulting from joint versus specialized production, using a calculation of scope economies. A translogarithmic cost function is estimated for the system using panel data with thirteen cross-sectional units, or banks. It is concluded that, for all the banks analyzed, there are savings derived from joint production. Economies of scope show a decreasing trend between the beginning and end of the period under study and, in general, are higher for state-owned banks, with Banco Nacional exhibiting the highest values in the entire sample.
