Opis:This article conceptualizes and systematizes briefly the term “transhumanism” from some writings of the founders of that cultural and philosophical movement. The scientific and technological connotation of transhumanism problematizes the traditional concept of Renaissance Humanism forged by the Humanities. Therefore, in order to understand if transhumanism constitutes a new humanism, we analyze the Oratio de hominis dignitate (1486) written by Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494). The Italian author has stressed the potential of “man” to overcome through freedom and become a true human being. Transhumanism is interpreted according to the concept of “man” and “human dignity” proposed by Pico della Mirandola, considering the similarities and differences between both cultural and philosophical movements. However, the interpretation of this humanistic concept in relation to transhumanism presents a fundamental dilemma for bioethics, namely: the preservation or transformation of the human nature by science and technology.
