Descripción:This essay constitutes an introductory interpretation about impoverishment and social movements in Costa Rica, beginning in the 1980s. To carry out the analysis, the phenomena of pauperization of the middle sectors, the proliferation of the new poor and the problems associated with exclusion are studied. In a second moment, the social movements are approached, based on the problems that marked the period: the teachers' strike in 1995, the protests against the Combo del ICE in 2000 and the mass demonstrations against the TLC in 2006-2007. From the perspective of recent history, sources based on the Programa del Estado de la Nación, written press and texts already published are consulted. In the end, it concludes in the recognition of the complex Costa Rican social reality, characterized by the widening of the gaps between rich and poor; and the increase in discontent expressed in street protests.
