Descrizione:This study focuses on the economic policies, developments, and prevailing approaches in the Republic of Costa Rica over the past three decades. It presents the framework within which government action has taken place, considering the proposals and “conditionalities” of international financial institutions, local challenges in public finance and financial reform, and the demands of a new era in the international economic arena. It traces the emergence of new actors, as well as the implications for the country of so-called conservative macroeconomics. It proposes that there is a unified and defined course of action in Costa Rican economic policy, at least during the period 1985–2010. It suggests that the Latin American region exhibits similar characteristics, according to studies by the International Monetary Fund cited herein: a common regional climate in terms of environmental conditions, practices, and policies during the period under consideration.
