Descrizione:The Historical, Political, Ethical and Religious Treatises of the Chinese Monarchy were published in Europe in 1676 by the Dominican Domingo Fernández de Navarrete. This book came to be considered required reading and an accommodation manual for Christian missions in the Chinese empire and for learning about their culture. Based on this work, this article aims to analyze some of the rhetorical articulations of Chinese reality that the Dominican captured in the document and how some Chinese cultural concepts, unknown in the Western world, had to be adapted to communicate them to the European reader, and likewise, how this Christian reality did not adapt to that Eastern society. Furthermore, the analysis reveals some controversies that arose between Jesuits and Dominicans, since, according to Fernández de Navarrete, the Jesuits had transgressed Christian precepts, violations that were narrated and denounced in the Treatises upon their return to Europe.
