Descripción:Water is essential for the development of human life, therefore its quality is also essential. Poor quality or contaminated water can bring serious public health problems for the population that uses it, increasing morbidity and even mortality in a region. In order to know the situation of water quality in the El Barón Settlement in Esparza, Puntarenas; in the second half of 2019, and as a result of apparent contamination in the water that reached the homes of this community. Physical and chemical determinations were carried out on samples of drinking water, including: odor, taste, pH, conductivity, chlorides, and by atomic absorption: calcium, magnesium, and cadmium. This study showed that the water supplied in the El Barón Settlement, in Esparza, Puntarenas meets the specifications of the analyzed parameters of the operational control, first level and second level of the Regulation for the quality of Drinking Water No. 38924-S, but High concentrations of cadmium 1.68 ± 0.07 mg / L were found, above the maximum admissible value (VMA) 0.003 mg / L according to the same regulation. The high presence of cadmium in water can have health consequences in the medium term, since even a low exposure can cause damage to the kidneys and liver, as well as increase the fragility of the bones.
