Description:The Spanish chivalry romance "Claribalte" ,whose first edition appeared in Valencia in 1519, was the first published work of Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo, later famous as chronicler of the Indies. Despite being a chivalric romance, the book presents some characteristics that distinguish it from other books of the genre. It has been said that "Claribalte" may have been the first work of fiction written in Spanish in the Americas. Were it not for Fernández de Oviedo's work as a chronicler of the Indies, Claribalte may have been almost completely forgotten since it was devalued in later eras for being unreal and not being "fabulous".
