Descripción:The classical concepts of conservation of natural resources are revised and a new definition, in keeping with the actual needs of Central America as a developing region, is proposed. The terms of preservation or natural history as synonyms of conservation are antagonistic; the latter should necessarily be considered as a dynamic and eminently economic concept. The ecological, educational, conceptual, institutional and economic problems that affect forestry resources in Central America are analyzed. Special emphasis is placed on incorporation or creation of new concepts in forestry that can be used in these countries toward better forest conservation measures. Finally, solutions to these problems, based on the planning, institutional and social approaches, are proposed.
