| Beskrivelse: | Introduction: Founded in 1994, the Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo de Costa Rica (MADC) emerged within a Central American context marked by institutional fragility and limited infrastructure for contemporary art. Objective: The paper seeks to analyze the evolution of the MADC in relation to its regional context, Costa Rican cultural policies, and founding process, as well as the conceptual and disciplinary tensions between art and design and its curatorial practices. Methods: A qualitative, documentary, and analytical methodology is employed, combining a review of relevant literature, an analysis of institutional archives and cultural regulations, and a critical examination of programs and strategies developed between 1994 and 2019. The author’s experience as chief curator is incorporated as a situated analytical source, critically examined and problematized. Results: The analysis shows that the MADC is configured as a cultural policy apparatus that articulates art and design, generating disciplinary tensions and reconfigurations in its curatorial and circulation strategies. Conclusions: The MADC has consolidated itself as an institution in motion, whose hybrid and experimental model has had a significant impact on the Costa Rican and Central American museological field, revealing both its potential and its structural vulnerabilities. |
