Description:Despite the efforts of the Bolivian Catholic University to curb dropout during the strict quarantine of 2020 by COVID-19, the numbers of students who dropped out of the university, although partially, were high. Given this, the objective of this investigation was to know the causes of student desertion at the U.C.B., Cochabamba, in 2020. From in-depth interviews based on qualitative research, five causes were identified: family, economic, access to technological resources and connectivity, emerging distance classes, academic and personal performance. The frustration generated by these causes affected students emotionally, leading them to drop out despite the university's strategies. Hence, this scenario opens the possibility of rethinking the theoretical and methodological frameworks on desertion and to evidence the elements from a relational logic, being necessary to deepen a qualitative look in the reflection on desertion with research that reconstructs the life stories of the students, recognizing their voice in the construction of policies to reduce university student desertion.
