Beschreibung:This article explores the discussions on the ageing of Costa Rica’s population that emerged during the nine National Demography Seminars held between 1957 and 1987. Although specific papers on this topic were presented only until the final two seminars during the 1980s, concerns about a progressively ageing population can already be traced in the earlier texts. In addition, the article examines certain concerns related to population growth which, following demographic changes, contributed to a scenario marked by a trend toward population ageing. The analysis is primarily based on a review of the documents published from these National Seminars. These discussions are understood as part of a broader consolidation of biopolitical approaches adopted by states, in which the study of population became a constitutive element.
