Description:In this approach of Risas y llanto (1888), an introductory novel in Costa Rican literature, I analyze the creation of the national, urban imaginary from San José. Literature was linked to the political nationalism from which the identity project emerged, Manuel Argüellos novel portrays the bourgeoisie's strategies to build the identity by eliminating multicultural perspectives with homogenous and racist ones. This imaginary, manipulated by Costa Rican politicians and intellectuals since the decade of 1880 until today, visualizes Costa Rica as a kind of Arcadian plain in which we are all white, equal, and peaceful; such as recreated in Argüello´s novel.
