Descripción:A characterization of the water resources of the Colon river microbasin, located northwest of the city of San Salvador, was performed to determine the main hydrochemical characteristics of the water sources, the relationship between surface and groundwater was investigated, the water balance of the microbasin was calculated, and a conceptual hydrogeological model of the water system was made. The hydrochemical data indicate that surface and groundwater are mainly calcium bicarbonate or magnesium bicarbonate and calcium or magnesium sulfate or chloride. From the water balance it’s estimated that the potential recharge to the aquifer system is approximately 24.23 million m3/year. The conceptual hydrogeological model of the microbasin shows that the aquifers are mainly made up of rocks and deposits of volcanic origin. Two aquifers were identified, a shallow one, captured by dug wells, and a deeper one, captured by drilled wells.
