Beschreibung:This article proposes a study of the importance of humanities as the foundation for a model of public university education that this year will celebrate 85 years of responding to the training needs of high-level professionals in the country. The first part of this work will be a brief recap of the main events that shaped the university we have today, we will show how the incorporation of General Studies (also known as the humanities) in the late 1950s first helped to provide a unified foundation for the institution’s formation, which later became one of the pillars of an educational model that has championed the need to provide teaching that is not limited to specialized knowledge in a single field of study. Finally, the article will reflect on how this transdisciplinary model is, despite criticism from some sectors, of vital importance for adequately fulfilling the institution’s substantive activities.
