| Deskribapena: | This article aims to analyze the teaching mediation carried out by a mathematics teacher when introducing the probabilistic concepts of more probable events, less probable events, and equally probable events in a fourth-grade primary education class in Costa Rica. For this purpose, a didactic lesson proposal based on the use of the universal urn model was developed using concrete materials, where the teacher’s intentional mediation played a fundamental role in introducing probabilistic concepts through questions that challenged students to answer about properties related to the concepts under study. Data collection included transcriptions of audio recordings of whole-class and group discussions conducted throughout the lesson between the teacher and the students. The data analysis revealed the relevance of the teacher’s mediation in helping some students overcome certain beliefs related to the explored concepts and in promoting a consolidated understanding of those concepts. |
