CHARACTERIZATION OF A MICROBIAL FUEL CELL WITH PEROVSKITE CATHODE USING ENTEROBACTER ASBURIAE ISOLATED FROM COFFEE MILL EFFLUENTS.

Descripción:The optimization of the design and operating conditions of an air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) was evaluated for its application in coffee-processing wastewater inoculated with Enterobacter asburiae. The electrochemical performance of a novel carbon cloth cathode modified with a double-layer perovskite (Cs₄NiBi₂Cl₁₂) was experimentally compared to that of a commercial MnO₂ electrode. The MFCs were fed with coffee wastewater and operated using ammonia-treated anodes, with Shewanella oneidensis as a control inoculum and E. asburiae, previously isolated from the same effluent. The results showed that the perovskite-modified cathode produced higher voltages than the unmodified electrode and that NH₃ treatment of the anode significantly improved electrical performance. A maximum current density of 0,6 ± 0,2 µA/cm² was achieved with S. oneidensis and treated anodes. Under the same conditions as the treated anode, the maximum current density was 0,28 ± 0,05 µA/cm² with E. asburiae inoculum, also confirming the electrogenic activity of E. asburiae. Overall, the modifications implemented clearly demonstrated a catalytic effect and enhanced the electrochemical performance of the MFCs.
