Use of university libraries by the faculty of the School of Library and Information Sciences of the University of Costa Rica

Descripción:The library system of the University of Costa Rica serves as a crucial support for academic education and knowledge generation, which are top priorities for a higher education institution. As part of the self-assessment processes for programs accredited by the National System for Higher Education Accreditation (SINAES), indicators are employed to evaluate the support provided by the information center to students and faculty. Recognizing that these indicators are somewhat limited in assessing the contribution of the university library to the academic goals of the School of Library and Information Science, this article aims to apply evaluation indicators for university libraries based on the faculty's perspective. A questionnaire was developed to gather insights into the usage practices of library services, information resources, and facilities by 22 surveyed faculty members. The results indicate that the Carlos Monge Alfaro Library is the most frequently used by faculty due to its extensive print collection in the field of Library Science, with its loan service being one of the most requested (60%). The website is utilized to access full-text databases (91%), and the support services used include reference inquiries and the coordination of activities such as tours, lectures, and practical exercises. It is concluded that the faculty is highly satisfied with the library services, considering them as an essential resource (77%) that they actively promote (90%) among their students.
