Affective polarization, class and gender: an analysis of young people in Argentinian agrocities

| Descripción: | Introduction: In the confluence between youth studies and polarization studies, this paper investigates the affective polarization of young citizens from agrocities in the southwest of Buenos Aires Province in Argentina in relation to gender and class status. Objective: By analyzing both the affective polarization of political party coalitions and political leaders, the aim is to examine the incidence of these classic sociological variables on affective polarization of young citizens from agrocities in the southwest of Buenos Aires Province. Methodology: An ad hoc survey conducted in 2023 for the doctoral thesis with 1,222 high school students is used, the like-dislike scale is replicated as a measure of affective polarization, and inferential statistics are carried out. Results: In a context of high level of unknown political party coalitions in contrast with the knowledge of political leaders, the results of the like-dislike scale show a medium level of affective polarization, explained by political sympathy for Javier Milei in a context of high general political dislike. Moreover, in a framework where males and upper classes have higher levels of affective polarization, gender contributes mainly to understand the libertarian phenomenon, and the class status to the polarization of macrism and kirchnerism. Conclusions: In short, this study provides analytic elements to understand the nuances of affective polarization among young citizens of Argentinian agrocities. |
