Descripción:To identify of external and internal load indicators in youth handball players during a congested-fixture tournament, selecting variables through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) as a data reduction technique, and to determine difference between sexes. Methods: Data were obtained from 73 youth handball players (33 women and 38 men) of eight local clubs during a 3-days congested-fixture tournament. Twelve matches (six women, six men) were analysed using PCA and an independent t-test for sex-related differences. Results: six main load indicators were identified, five of external load [relative distance (RD), relative acceleration (Racc), maximum acceleration (AccMAX), maximum speed (MS), and acceleration-deceleration differences (DfAcc-Dec)] and, one indicator of internal load [average heart rate (HRAVG)]. In men, the most representative indicators were RD, HRAVG and AccMAX, they explained 39.6% of the variance. In women, MS and AccMAX, they explained 44.4% of the variance. RAcc (p<.01), AccMAX (p<.01), MS (p<.01) were higher in men than women, and HRAVG (p=.02) was higher in women than men. Conclusions: External and internal load showed differences between male and female handball players. Men were characterized by variables associated with volume, while for women, indicators related to intensity were more common. For congested tournaments, it is important to individualize the training loads according to gender, as well as to prioritize the physical qualities to be trained.
