Description:This essay reviews the characteristics of the Costa Rican educational system, and then approaches the challenges that arise in education as a result to that system, to the demands given by the vertiginous changes at the global and local levels, to the territorial inequalities, to the economic model, and to the scale of values that promote the non-continuation of rural practices related to agriculture by young people. The reflection revolves around what is understood as education and how it should be linked to the contexts in which it is generated, so that learning is meaningful and relevant, and promotes the quality of individual and collective life. Challenges that have become intensified historical debts, and those that have been appearing after the low capacity of the system to provide the conditions of access, quality and permanence of students are examined. The aim of this paper is to rethink education and the educational practices developed by the institutions, so that these practices are closer to the needs and desires of the participants and help improve their quality of life.
