Descripción:The purpose of this paper is to present a theoretical and methodological proposal to foster the debate and to support reflection for the teaching of history in the national curriculum of El Salvador. To accomplish this, it is first identified how the teaching of history is incorporated into the curriculum of Social Studies from the first cycle of basic education up to high school. Secondly, the importance of working on historical awareness is developed through a theoretical proposal that includes the interrelation of a historical narrative, the dimensions of historical thought and critical thinking, as well as a potential methodological link with the approach of competency-based education.
