Descripción: | This paper analyzes the role of mass media in the conflict between the governments of Costa Rica and Nicaragua on Isla Calero and its impact on public opinion. The mass media produced a xe- nophobic attitude and increased militarization in Costa Rica. These effects were minimized, hidden or justified by the government of Costa Rica. Also, the atmosphere created by the media increased fear and hatred among people and generated a debate, proposed by many people, that meant to rethink the “peaceful tradition” of Costa Rica and suggested the need for restoration of the army in the country. |
