Descripció:This paper aims to analyze the perception and use of pedagogical translation to develop linguistic skills when learning English as a foreign language at a higher education level, while also considering its value as a teaching resource in current educational contexts. A qualitative approach was adopted; however, some quantitative data were integrated. The population consisted of fourth-year students from the English Teaching major at Universidad Nacional, Heredia, Costa Rica. Data were collected through a questionnaire that included close as well as open-ended questions and later analyzed using the transversalization process to identify patterns, opinions, and perceptions regarding the use of pedagogical translation. Its usefulness in the acquisition of vocabulary, understanding of grammatical structures, and common expressions is particularly highlighted. These findings suggest the need to reconsider the role of translation in the English learning process, especially at lower proficiency levels, by promoting a more strategic use of the first language under pedagogical supervision. This approach may support a gradual transition toward the use of the foreign language without relying on this resource.
